The making

Letting the blue climb.

Cream at the top, deep indigo at the hem — a single, slow gradient, pulled from the vat one centimetre at a time.

A fade like this can't be painted on. The cloth is hung above the vat and lowered by degrees over a full afternoon — the bottom edge soaking longest, the top barely kissed. Plant indigo climbs the fibres on its own, and where it stops becomes the horizon line of the bag.

Get the timing wrong and the gradient bands instead of breathing. The dyer reads it by eye, raising and pausing the cloth against the light, until cream gives way to indigo with no seam you can point to.

Structured handles, a base that stands on its own, room for a laptop and a day's worth of detours. The fade does the talking; everything else stays quiet.
